My '96 had a large, round, #145 main jet. I replaced it with a small round #155 with no apparant ill effects, as the threads seemed to be the same. I was initially concerned that perhaps the narrow outside diameter of the new jet would let fuel "slip by", but it has not seemed to. I've ridden 1000 miles+ since the switch, and things seem fine.
I'm no expert though...so take this purely as my personal experience and not as the way things ought to be done.
